With Leonardo DiCaprio and Roger Deakins winning Oscars in recent years, the hunt is on for Oscar fans to champion their next underdog, who despite numerous nominations hasn't yet been able to scoop the gong outright.

Well, Amy Adams is certainly a worthy case, having five nominations to her name to date and deserving at least a few more (being snubbed for Arrival and all).

She's got a ripe Oscar-worthy role due later this year, playing Dick Cheney's wife Lynne in Adam McKay's political drama Backseat. The Academy loves transformative roles as well as those based on real people, plus she'll be playing opposite Christian Bale, which should give her plenty to work with.

Count on Adams to win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar next year, fending off the likes of Nicole Kidman (Boy Erased), Claire Foy (First Man) and Margot Robbie (Mary Queen of Scots).
