Steven Spielberg is always working on a whole bunch of tantalising projects at the same time, which has the effect of giving film fans so much to look forward to, but then leaving some movies in limbo as the director jumps from one thing to the next. Fortunately, the long-in-development remake of West Side Story is finally gearing up to shoot later on in 2019, for a release next year.

The adaptation marks Spielberg's first attempt at a musical, and has an exciting mix of newcomers and rising stars in the lead roles, with 17-year-old student Rachel Zegler cast as Maria opposite Ansel Elgort's Tony.

The director has been accused of entering something of a groove recently, delivering films that are solid enough, but lack the spark he's known for. The shift to an entirely new genre, then, could be just what fans have been waiting for.
