Assassin's Creed may have flopped hard, thus damaging the reputation of at least director Justin Kurzel if not stars Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, but looking past that it's worth remembering just how good the trio's first team-up was.

Although it didn't receive much fanfare at the time, with a box-office haul of just over $16m and a 6.6 rating on IMDb, Kurzel's Macbeth is a stunning, atmospheric take on one of William Shakespeare's greatest plays.

The movie's haunting tone and dazzling visual style perfectly complement its two lead performances, with Fassbender giving one of the great takes on the titular character, commanding the screen and fully exploring his complexity, and not becoming any less mesmerising even during his downfall. The same, too, goes for Cotillard's Lady Macbeth in a turn both powerful and poignant.

With strong action sequences to boot, this really deserves to be remembered among the better Shakespeare adaptations. Instead, it's barely even remembered.
