Alright, things are about to get very controversial.

Everything Everywhere All at Once is a great film... in some ways. The acting is excellent and on a technical level, it's an absolute masterpiece. The sheer vibrancy and creativity of the film-making on display here is nothing short of mind-blowing.

Unfortunately, this isn't quite so sturdy on a writing level. Everything has many great ideas but so much is constantly being thrown at the viewer that it ultimately becomes a total mess that isn't really about anything at all.

Stakes are non-existent, the big emotional storyline is clumsily written and gets lost in all the surrealism and the entire film is, in general, a bit too much. The absurdist fight scenes and wacky multiversal shenanigans are exhilarating at first, but there is such a thing as 'Too much of a good thing'. Eventually, all the wackiness reaches a complete overload and the film becomes borderline monotonous.

It's a good film and the best on this list, but the praise is wildly overblown. At the time of writing, it's #130 on the IMDb Top 250 and above scores of genuine cinematic masterpieces, which is pretty scandalous.

To be honest, this one will probably face a backlash soon enough. Given how little there really is going on beneath the surface, it's unlikely to endure repeat viewings.

An Underrated Alternative: First Reformed (2018) - A brilliant drama from Paul Schrader, and a far superior A24 film.
