4. Exploring The Attic - REC

A zombie movie with a twist, REC starts out pretty standard with a bunch of characters being trapped in a claustrophobic apartment block with only monsters for company, but things take a turn when it's revealed the residents have been zombified by a virus that allows for demonic possession. Makes more sense than rage-infected monkeys, I suppose.

There are a couple standout sequences - the opening zombie and the shock of a body tumbling down the stairwell to name a couple - but nothing compares to the final night-vision fuelled rampage of Tristana. Infected when she was a kid, the zombie was taken to the attic of the apartment block by an agent of the Vatican and sealed in there when her possession became viral - unleashed for the first time years later by our numbskull heroes.

The entire finale is suitably terrifying, as characters wander the pitch-black darkness of the attic trying to avoid the horribly disfigured and nude monster seeking some grub. Obviously they can't avoid her forever, and when the zombie catches their scent, the remaining survivors are dragged into the darkness, leaving their fates hanging in the minds of the audience.
