11. The Corner - The Blair Witch Project

Although Paranormal Activity ushered in the new wave of found-footage movies, The Blair Witch Project proved just how effective the sub-genre could be eight years prior. Committing to Kayfabe and pretending that the actual movie was genuinely discovered in the woods - to the point where missing posters of the cast were put up around certain towns in America - the low-budget thriller scared audiences silly who were convinced the whole thing was real.

Obviously it wasn't, and watching it out of context today it becomes apparent that the meta marketing was essential, because virtually nothing spooky happens in the movie. A couple of shapes are made with twigs, rocks get moved around and the campers might have been chased by something, but the quality of the images combined with the shaky camerawork leaves most audiences today frustrated and annoyed, rather than scared.

Still, the very final scene, where the remaining campers Mike and Heather, stumble upon a house that could be the home of the titular Blair Witch, is pretty horrifying. At the time - and even now - seeing Mike standing in the corner as Heather crashes to the floor makes you a believer of this cursed story.
