The Remake: 2002's Unfaithful is an erotic thriller directed by Adrian Lyne (Fatal Attraction) about a married woman (Diane Lane) who cheats on her husband (Richard Gere) with a dishy Frenchman (Olivier Martinez). The movie was a significant financial success and gained much attention for its graphic sex scenes, while Lane's work earned her a Best Actress Oscar nomination despite the movie's generally mixed reviews. The Original: Claude Chabrol directed the original movie, the 1968 film The Unfaithful Wife, which follows an incredibly similar plot but is of course bound by the taste and decency requirements of the time period, so it's nowhere near as graphic sexually. Also, the ending is more concrete and less-ambiguous. Which One Is Better?: Both are fine films, but the remake better realises the wife's sexual yearning, and the ending is more provocative, even if the pic's overall sexiness might cause it to be deemed "high trash" by some.
