Set in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley (the pornography capital of the world, apparently) during the so-called Golden Age of Porn, Paul Thomas Anderson’s second feature film chronicled the rise and fall of porn star Dirk Diggler – an unusually well-endowed young man inspired by real-life porn actor John Holmes.

Starring Mark Wahlberg in his breakout role as Diggler, Boogie Nights also boasted a talented ensemble cast including Burt Reynolds, Julianne Moore and John C. Reilly alongside one of the coolest retro soundtracks since Pulp Fiction.

Its most famous scene comes right at the end of the movie when we finally catch a glimpse of Dirk Diggler’s fabled penis. Sorry to disappoint ladies and gents: that wasn’t Wahlberg’s actual appendage but a prosthetic made of plaster and topped with a handcrafted merkin.

Wahlberg did, however, keep his prosthetic dong after filming wrapped as a not so little reminder of his time on set.
