Deadpool was a stonking box office success beyond pretty much any expectation, scooping almost $800 million worldwide, proving that R-rated superhero movies can indeed succeed at the box office.

Fox responded by green-lighting an R-rated Logan, which is great, but there's the genuine worry that studios as a whole are going to take the wrong message away from Deadpool, that slapping failing franchises with an R-rating is an easy key to success.

Deadpool could've been a terrible R-rated movie if the script and performances weren't so brilliantly irreverent. The problem is that if future R-rated gambles flop, Hollywood will just dismiss Deadpool as a flash-in-the-pan hit rather than proof that mature audiences will turn up for big-budget films.
