15 Radical Superheroes To Diversify The MCU

7. Laura Kinney

Laura Kinney X-23
Marvel Comics

Laura Kinney (or X-23) is a clone of Wolverine with similar abilities, created by a sinister military-industrial cabal, much as he was, to create a brainwashed ‘ultimate weapon’. The two have very much a father-daughter relationship - and in the comics, when Logan died, his daughter carried on the Wolverine identity to honour him.

So is X-23 just Weapon X for the YA market? Absolutely not. Logan spent a century in black ops doing appalling things before Weapon X got hold of him. Laura was indoctrinated from ‘birth’ to avoid dealing with such savage raw material - and she still broke free of that conditioning to become a better person than her famous father.

Laura is stronger and more moral. While Logan gravitates towards violence as a first resort and killing as an expediency, she prefers to find other options, treating killing as a regrettable last resort. When Logan has been confronted with people attempting to exact revenge for his past violent acts, he’s hacked them all to death. Faced with the sins of her past, Laura embraced her victims, found common cause, and worked with them to bring the cycle of violence to an end.

As a survivor of abuse, Laura Kinney is a positive role model for women the world over, and probably the best possible choice to recast Wolverine for the MCU.
