4. John Travolta - I Am Wrath
I Am Wrath is John Travolta's failed attempt at pulling a Liam Neeson and jumping on the Geriaction bandwagon that has been rolling through Hollywood since the turn of the decade. Whether it is the industry capitalising on the nostalgia of ageing movie-goers or a reflection of how our views as a society have changed towards middle-age, the average age of action stars is a lot higher than it used to be.
The career revival that Travolta enjoyed after Quentin Tarantino made him relevant again seems like a lifetime ago, and the 62-year-old finds himself clutching at straws to find a new niche here. The Pulp Fiction star plays Stanley Hill, a retired Black Ops agent who dusts off his arsenal of weapons and takes on the underworld after his wife is murdered in what appears to be mugging gone wrong.
Put simply, Travolta just doesn't suit the part. While recent attempts at pushing older protagonists such as No Escape (Owen Wilson, 47) and The Gunman (Shaun Penn, 55) were poorly received, at least the actors involved were in some semblance of good-shape. Travolta is meant to be playing a family man, granted, but he doesn't look capable of a lap around the block, never mind taking on entire gangs.
Despite his best efforts, this is another big misstep from Travolta, who delivers a perfunctory performance that is as contrived as it is unconvincing.
