16 Brilliant WTF Moments From Kung Fury
13. The Tracking Gag
The aesthetic of the film is only one aspect of selling its gleeful '80s mythos. The soundtrack dips and muffles, mimicking the behaviour of an over-played VHS and the image skips every now and then.
To complete that particularly meta joke, the battle sequence between the arcade machine and Fury - which is already being built up into something epic - is never really seen on screen. The film's tracking drops out, obliterating the image and splicing in just momentary grabs from what looks like an extended fight that takes the pair into outer space.
As the tracking sorts itself out, Fury lands the killer blow, dropping the arcade monster, before putting a bullet into its head and walking away calmly framed by the explosion. It might as well have HERO SHOT emblazoned over the top.
