16 Intriguing Indie Films To Watch Out For In Spring 2014

12. Nymphomaniac, Parts I & II

Plot: A woman recounts her erotic journey to the man who found her in an alleyway after she took a brutal beating. Not much needs to be said about why anyone would be excited about this one. Ever the provocateur, Lars Von Trier seems to take great pleasure in pushing the envelope. Watch Breaking The Waves, Dancer In The Dark, or Antichrist---Von Trier has never been afraid of provoking the viewer. What's good about Nymphomaniac is that the title will either draw you in or repel you. There's no middle ground here. This two-part movie, which is apparently five-hours long altogether, will be dripping with sexuality. You're either okay with that, or you're not. If you are ok with that, then you should be in for a treat. The film has an interesting cast which includes Charlotte Gainsbourg, Shia LaBeouf, Stellan Skarsgard, Uma Thurman, Christian Slater, Jamie Bell, and Willem Dafoe. The full version made its debut in Denmark last Christmas and the uncut version of Part I recently premiered at the Berlin Film Festival. The verdict thus far? "Nymphomaniac annoys me, repels me,"says the Guardian, and then continues: "I think I might love it. It's an abusive relationship; I need to see it again." Wow. US release date: March 21st (part I), April 4th (part II)
