Luc Besson's mega-budget adaptation of the titular revered French sci-fi comics suffers from the baffling casting of Dane DeHaan as a square-jawed action hero and an excessive runtime, but it is absolutely like nothing else released last year.

Valerian is a stunning visionary spectacle above all else, with every penny of its $209 million budget making it to the screen. It's a film full of clever and innovative ideas - perhaps too many for its own good, really - while being unafraid to double down on the weird, and benefiting from Cara Delevingne's charming performance.

It's a total mess and crumbles apart if you try to find much logic in it, but it's also a stylistic marvel and certainly one of last year's most underrated tentpoles.
