18 Insanely Messed Up Movies You Might Not Be Able To Handle

13. Blue Velvet

Blue Velvet is arguably the scariest film of all time. There's just something about this story of a young man (Twin Peaks' Kyle MacLachlan) discovering a group of vile criminals operating within his seemingly innocent American suburban home which is just unbearably frightening.

Every shot is sinister, every musical cue is shiver-inducing, every scene in the film is loaded with dread and fear. Hell, even the opening montage of the quiet suburb is bloody terrifying.

As well as the cinematic terror, Blue Velvet is also a horrifying story about darkness lurking within the most ordinary of settings that boasts a nightmarish villain, Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper in his greatest-ever performance), who is one of the scariest, most depraved and most evil film antagonists of them all.

Although it's from the 1980s, Blue Velvet's power has not diminished by one iota and scenes such as Frank Booth torturing and raping a female singer and giving a man a crude lobotomy (it's off-screen, but the disturbing aftermath is clearly shown) are still far more shocking than much of the gory violence in modern horror films.

This is definitely David Lynch's masterpiece, but unfortunately it might be too intense for some to handle.
