20 90s Movie Scenes That Traumatized Us All
6. Audition - The Torture Scene
When Takashi Miike's superb horror flick Audition first premiered, many people walked out of the screening, and one person even angrily chastised Miike as they left. To be fair, it's hard to blame them. This ending is still horrible to watch now, and it will have been considerably more traumatizing in those days, which were before the public at large had been exposed to torture horror films like Saw or Hostel.
There's hardly any gore in Audition's climactic torture scene, with it instead going for the jugular on a psychological level. In this sequence, Asami (Eihi Shiina) drugs her new boyfriend Aoyama (Ryo Ishibashi), paralyzing him but leaving him entirely able to feel everything she's doing to him. She sticks acupuncture needles into his abdomen and under his eyes, and saws off one of his feet with a wire saw, all while sadistically mocking him.
Thankfully, Asami's interrupted, but if she hadn't been, one shudders to think of what she would've done to him. And this was all because he didn't love only her - for the record, he was a loving father to his teenage son, which is no crime! The torture is dragged out for ages, and you'll feel every agonizing second of it, especially thanks to Eihi Shiina's skin-crawlingly evil performance. It might be largely bloodless, but this is more disturbing than anything from the Saw movies.
