After a number of successful films in the 80’s, the 90’s was a breakthrough decade for Antonio Banderas as he starred in many critically acclaimed films, such as Philadelphia and Interview With A Vampire. He also established himself as an action hero in Desperado before landing the role in Mask Of Zorro.
The film features the original Zorro, played by Anthony Hopkins, escaping from prison to find his long-lost daughter and avenge the death of his wife at the hands of a corrupt governor. He is aided by his successor, played by Banderas, who is pursuing his own vendetta against the governor's right-hand man, while falling in love with the original Zorro’s daughter.
In a time where Hollywood was seeming to favour more digital effects over practical ones, the film went against this trend and relied heavily on excellent stunt work, and showcases some very entertaining sword fights. The film also does a great job of evoking the spirit of classic swashbuckling Hollywood films, while also keeping things fresh for modern audiences.
So if you are up for some fast, fun and exhilarating entertainment, then Mask Of Zorro will certainly do the job for you.
