20 Alternative 2014 Movie Awards

4. Most Phoned-In Performance - Nicolas Cage In Everything

Nicolas Cage continued his alarming descent into 'high quantity, low quality' paycheck gigs by appearing in four movies in 2014, all of which were terrible. First up was the direct-to-video Rage (currently sitting at 14% on Rotten Tomatoes), which somehow managed to be even more bland and generic than its title by offering a dull and derivative revenge thriller. Then came Left Behind, which sees the actor failing to even attempt to look interested in a box office bomb that is regarded as one of the worst movies of the year, with its current Rotten Tomatoes score a whopping 2%. Dying of the Light (5% on Rotten Tomatoes) is supposed to be a serious thriller, but suffers from a wildly uneven tone and some highly distracting overacting from Cage, who seems to think that he's in a different movie to everyone else. Last but by no means least is Outcast, an action movie set in China during the Crusades starring Hayden Christensen (yes, you read that right) that sees Cage sport yet another ridiculous long-haired wig and an even worse English accent (if that's what its even supposed to be) to play a one-eyed Crusader-turned-bandit. Seriously, it has to be seen to be believed. Another year, another string of awful Nicolas Cage movies; this man is in dire need of his own McConnaissance.

Runner Up - Johnny Depp In Transcendence

Ever since the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise launched him to the top of the A-list and made him one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood, Johnny Depp has played a number of roles that can be summed up in three words; wig, face-paint and accent. So it was a refreshing change to see him play a normal character (for a while, at least) in Transcendence, but his turn as Will Caster turned out to be painfully one-dimensional and often plain dull. Even when the character becomes sentient artificial intelligence, instead of coming across as a cold, calculating machine Depp just sounded bored and uninterested, much like the people who saw the movie itself.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
