20 Awesome Horror Movies That Never Got Sequels
18. The Sixth Sense
The Sixth Sense was a monstrous success beyond anyone's wildest expectations, and yet despite scoring six Oscar nominations (including Best Picture) and remaining the second highest-grossing horror movie of all time to this very day, nothing else has ever been done with it.
It goes without saying that a sequel to M. Night Shyamalan's phenomenal supernatural horror film would've printed hundreds of millions of dollars even if it turned out terrible, but in a rare example of Hollywood knowing when a one-off should be a one-off, it never came to pass.
Given that the first film satisfyingly resolved every narrative thread and delivered the sort of stupefyingly effective plot twist you can only get away with once, there wasn't much of an easy route for a sequel.
Plus, it seems that Shyamalan himself preferred to move on with other projects, with the majority of his subsequent career defined by entirely standalone genre films.
Furthermore, Shyamalan reportedly owns the sequel rights to most of his projects, likely meaning that Disney couldn't have easily pursued The Sixth Sense 2 without him anyway.
