20 Best Movie Blu-Rays Of 2016

3. Anomalisa

Anomalisa Blu-Ray
Paramount Pictures

Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson’s stop-motion animation Anomalisa is, like many of Kaufman’s works, predictably strange but also oddly touching and beautiful. Telling the tale of a man in the midst of an existential crisis, the movies follows author Michael Stone (voiced by David Thewlis) as he attends a conference and has a brief affair with a woman, the first person he has felt a connection with in a long time. Both charming and bittersweet, the film was one of 2015’s best-loved and fully deserving of its Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature.

Paramount’s Blu-ray release of Anomalisa delves into the intricate processes behind making such a film. A thirty-minute documentary with cast and crew interviews offers comprehensive insight of the production from start to finish including the meticulous animation involved and recording of the movie’s voice performances, while the ‘Intimacy in Miniature’ featurette goes into detail about one of Anomalisa’s most talked about moments – a stop-motion puppet sex scene.
