According to Matthew McConaughey, at some point a few years ago, the actor woke up and decided that he didn't want to make bad movies anymore - he wanted to be a proper actor, with a filmography that he could be proud of. Now, in 2013, he's well on his way to achieving that dream - talk about a comeback! With star turns in Magic Mike, Dallas Buyer's Club, Killer Joe (and an upcoming role as the lead in Christopher Nolan's sci-fi flick Interstellar), gone are the days of McConaughey the laughing stock - now he's one of Hollywood's most sought after stars. It's in Mud, though (shot in 2012 but released in the US earlier this year) that McConaughey gives a career best performance - certified proof that the man really can act. Mud tells the simple story of a man named - you guessed it - Mud, who befriends two boys whilst he's hiding out on a small island somewhere in the Mississippi. The premise offers up McConaughey the chance to show off his acting chops, and whilst the movie is affecting, it never veers into overtly sentimental territory. Rest assured, silly title aside, this is a movie you don't want to miss.
