8. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 – Yondu’s Funeral
James Gunn’s long-awaited GOTG sequel was a film full of great moments from Baby Groot randomly rocking up with a severed human toe to David Hasselhoff’s cameo, but there was one scene in particular that stood out amongst them all – Yondu’s bittersweet but beautiful funeral.
Though he wasn’t exactly the most sympathetic character at first glance – what with all the intergalactic child trafficking and what have you – GOTG Vol. 2 saw Yondu do a 180 with a tragic and heroic arc that saw him sacrifice his own life to save his surrogate son Peter Quill.
Yondu’s character turnaround earned him a funeral fit for the kind of weirdly loveable anti-hero he was in a visually gorgeous scene set to the tune of Cat Stevens’ tear-jerker pop ballad Father and Son that saw his fellow Ravagers gather in their spaceships en masse to salute him with a flurry of fireworks.
A perfect ending to the movie and a perfect send-off for our favourite blue-skinned space bandit.
