20 Best Movies Moments Of 2017
7. Gerald’s Game – The Degloving
2017 was a big year for Stephen King adaptations and
unusually for a big screen version of a King story most of them were excellent
… although the less said about The Dark Tower the better. While Andy Muschietti
gave us a brilliantly harrowing scene in It with Georgie’s gruesome death,
fellow director Mike Flanagan managed to out-gore him in a particularly graphic
and grim scene in Gerald’s Game.
Carla Gugino stars as Jessie who retreats to a remote lakeside cabin accompanied by her husband Gerald in a bid to spice up their marriage with a little bondage play which results in Jessie handcuffed to the bed by both wrists. It’s at this inopportune moment that Gerald drops dead of a heart attack with the keys to the handcuffs far from Jessie’s reach. Oh s**t.
As time goes on the increasingly weak and desperate Jessie witnesses a stray dog snacking on her dead husband’s body and a possibly real, possibly hallucinated serial killer stalking her and eventually resorts to using a piece of smashed glass to cut and peel back the skin of her hand so she can free one arm, fetch the key and finally escape.
Flanagan doesn’t shy away from showing us Jessie’s degloving in all its graphic and gory detail in a scene that certainly isn’t for the squeamish. Seriously, if you made it through this scene without looking away at least once we salute you.
