Batman Alum: Katie Holmes What do Rachel Dawes, art thieves, and Nazis all have in common? Why, they're all featured in Simon Curtis' heavily sanitized account of the true story of a woman trying to recapture a family painting that was stolen by the anti-Semites during World War II and eventually hung in a museum. Holmes' role as the wife of the lawyer (Ryan Reynolds) tasked with bringing the painting back to its rightful owner (Helen Mirren) is small, but she's able to remind us that she was at least a capable actress before Tom Cruise put her into seclusion all those years ago. (Oddly enough, her role here as the supportive housewife eerily recalls her servile relationship with Cruise.) Granted, no one is showing up Helen Mirren, who does more with a few subtle gestures than Holmes could do with a megaphone and the ghost of Audrey Hepburn at her side.
