Ryan Coogler's Sinners is an expertly crafted, expectation-defying horror film that locks the audience in from its first few moments all the way to the very end.

Sinners begins with a gorgeous mural accompanied by narration which explains the potential for sufficiently powerful music to pierce the veil between life and death - which, as anyone who's seen the film will know, has one hell of a payoff.

After this initial setup, the scene shifts to 1932 Clarksdale, Mississippi, where a bloodied Sammie (Miles Caton) rocks up with a broken guitar to the church his father preaches at, and unceremoniously opens the door.

The packed congregation turns to Sammie, and as Sammie's father calls him forward, urging him to renounce sin and put his guitar away, we catch brief flashes of the horrific, at yet unseen events he just experienced.

Sammie continues to hold the guitar's neck tight, before the scene ends and we go back to the day prior, where the rest of the movie's wild, vampire-slaying shenanigans take place.

Talk about an attention-grabbing opening to get you thinking about where everything's going from here.
