20 Best Sci-Fi Films Of The 21st Century
10. Okja
Okja is a magical bit of cinema, that might make you cringe but it's the only way to describe this film, and despite its general weirdness writer Jon Ronson and director Bong Joon-ho have taken a story that anyone who's had a pet will empathise with. On the surface, Okja is the story of a young girl going to great lengths to be reunited with her beloved pet. Beneath lies a message about how most people wish only to serve their own needs - not necessarily in relation to animal rights, but...name a thing.
Throughout the film we see an evil corporation who care only about the bottom line, pretty par for the course, but we also see a member of an animal rights group taking advantage of a young girl, and endangering an animal, to serve their own needs, as well as a zoologist completely corrupted by the aforementioned corporation.
And on the topic of said zoologist, Jake Gyllenhaal is by far the highlight in a movie full of strong performances. Showing that he's a phenomenal comedic actor, playing Johnny Wilcox with aplomb and tapping into a such a convincing, bizarre and unhinged personality that, frankly, you'd be forgiven for wondering if he's really acting.
