20 Fantastic Blimps, Balloons, And Dirigibles In Movies
6. Around The World In 80 Days (1956)
If you’re going to travel around the world, it seems a balloon is the best way to travel (and since this is the fourth film in the list with “world” in its title, that’s exactly what people with balloons tend to do). The most famous of Jules Verne’s adaptations is also the biggest in scope, taking Englishman Phileas Fogg around the world to win a bet against the snooty members of his gentlemen’s club.
Along with his loyal valet, Passepartout (played by Cantinflas), David Niven's Fogg sets off in a balloon to circle the globe, making numerous stops for several mini-adventures that allow for an endless parade of cameos from stars like Marlene Dietrich, John Carradine, Buster Keaton, and Frank Sinatra.
The story is breezy fun from S.J. Perelman, who also scripted The Marx Brothers movies Monkey Business and Horse Feathers.
