The only film on this list which is entirely in Aramaic, Apocalypto director Mel Gibson’s 2004 blockbuster may well feel like an odd choice to some readers, but it really is an extraordinary achievement in filmmaking to turn a thoughtful, sober meditation on faith and hardship into a gory, unrelenting endurance test for audiences—only to then turn said endurance test into a mainstream blockbuster without sacrificing any of its moral and ethical insights.

Viewers of any or no religion can enjoy this stomach-churning look into one man’s struggle to have his beliefs recognized in the face of unimaginable challenges, but it’s the moving performance of Jim Caviziel in the title role which makes this intense and unforgettable drama well worth revisiting, regardless of your beliefs (or lack thereof).

But maybe bring a sick bag along—just in case.

Cathal Gunning hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
