20 Horror Monsters That Were Scarier Before You Saw Them

Films like The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable garnered M. Night Shyamalan a reputation for jaw-dropping plot twists. So, when the horror director announced a project called The Village for 2004, fans were curious what the picture's earth-shattering reveal would be.

In a bizarre twist of fate, though, the bombshell twist this time around is arguably the strongest and weakest aspect of The Village's story.

Soaked in conspiracy, The Village centres around a secluded community that lives in fear of the surrounding woods that are populated by monstrous entities called Those We Do Not Speak Of. When a villager becomes gravely wounded, his blind girlfriend Ivy heads out into the world beyond the woods, hoping to find medicine.

Before she heads out, Ivy learns a terrible truth: Those We Don't Speak Of are actually the village elders in costume, who use fear to compel the villagers to stay in the community forever.

Although this is a fascinating twist, it stops The Village from being scary, as now we know the monsters don't exist. Stranger still, the movie concludes with Ivy fighting her brother, while he's dressed as one of Those We Don't Speak Of, in a scene that's supposed to be nervewracking, but falls flat since it's been established this monster is just a man in a costume.
