20 Horror Monsters That Were Scarier Before You Saw Them

Despite being on hiatus for over 15 years by this point, Jason Voorhees remains a legend of horror here in 2025. The towering revenant is infamous for his inhuman strength, relentless determination, and creative kills.

Another aspect that defines Jason is his hockey mask. Although the mask isn't frightening in itself, the fact that we know it conceals Jason's mutilated visage makes it absolutely nerve-shredding. Jason may have been unmasked a couple of times, but that big reveal is always anticipated, since each different movie tweaks the character design.

Considering how awesome Jason looked in Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, viewers should've been pumped to see how Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan was going to top it. That's why it's tragic that the titular villain has never looked worse than he did in Jason Takes Manhattan.

It's almost laughable when Jason's face is seen during the final scene, as the prosthetics look like they were composed out of papier-mâché. What's worse is that Jason's petrifying appearance is masterfully teased earlier when he's challenged by a bunch of muggers, so fans were expecting something truly haunting when his mask was eventually pulled off.
