20 Horror Monsters That Were Scarier Before You Saw Them

Hell Island, aka Attack of the Beast Creatures, has schlocky B-movie written all over it, but it does a fine job at keeping viewers on edge long before the Beast Creatures are seen up close.

Early on, there's a gory sequence of a character having his face melted in an acidic pond. During another eerie scene, a woman is lying awake at night when she notices glowing eyes multiplying in the distance, indicating she's being watched by a horde of monsters. Moments like this are legitimately freaky, which is why it's so mind-boggling to learn the Beast Creatures are doll-sized pygmies.

Now, Child's Play proved that a diminutive killer can be spooky. However, the design of these critters is so primitive that it's impossible to suspend your disbelief. Rather than using animatronics, it's obvious that crew members are behind or below the Beast Creatures, wiggling them around to simulate walking. To give the impression of the Beast Creatures attacking, the crew simply flings the dolls at the actors.

The Beast Creature scenes wouldn't be so ridiculous if they were shot in the cover of darkness, but for some reason, the majority of these scenes are in broad daylight, giving no way to mask how fake these critters look.
