20 Horror Monsters That Were Scarier Before You Saw Them
16. The Demon - Amityville 3-D
Based very loosely on a true story, The Amityville Horror centres around a family who are haunted by a dark presence after moving into their new home.
The original 1979 Amityville movie raked in a ton of cash, leading to the film being spun into a full franchise. Although that first film wasn't great, it was a masterpiece compared to the follow-ups, especially Amityville 3-D.
Even though this threequel was let down by excessive exposition, cheap scares, and its gimmicky presentation, the reveal of the demon is the weakest aspect.
The paranormal entity remains unseen for most of the runtime, suggesting it's a non-physical force, but in the end, the otherworldly being is shown to be a rubbery demon in a well. This demon looks so cheap, it's as if the crew grabbed any monster puppet they could find and threw it on set moments before shooting. Also, showing the demon in bubbling water isn't intimidating, since it looks like it's chilling out in a jacuzzi.
Not only was this a terrible way to end the story, it also lessened the impact of the previous instalments, now it's established the demonic force that's been haunting families for decades was... this.
