20 Horror Movie Characters Everyone Underestimated
12. The "Smiths" - Get Away
The marketing for last year's Nick Frost-penned horror-comedy Get Away did a fantastic job of concealing the film's big expectation-defying twist.
At face value, Get Away appears to revolve around a family, the Smiths, who take a holiday to the island of Svalta in Sweden, only to find themselves met by some incredibly unwelcoming and offputting locals.
It seems that Richard (Nick Frost), Susan (Aisling Bea), and their children Jessie (Maisie Ayres) and Sam (Sebastian Croft) are going to be ritualistically sacrificed by a cult, but at the end of the second act everything changes.
As it turns out, the Smiths are actually a family of serial killers who have posed as innocent travelers while venturing to Svalta for a murder holiday they call a "slaycation."
From here they slaughter their way across the island with gleeful abandon, and even when the authorities eventually show up, they absolutely believe that the Smiths are victims, granting them safe passage home at the end.
