20 Horror Movies From The 21st Century That Didn't Actually Suck
10. Them (2006)
This French horror is a classic exercise in taut terror. Clementine and Lucas have just bought a dilapidated country manor house and settle down for the night. They are awoken by loud music and look out of the window to find that their car has been moved down to the bottom of the drive. As time passes, it's clear that someone is in the house and as the invasion begins, the two have no choice but to escape into the forest.
It's only then that the true horror begins as they are stalked by people who simply want 'to play'. This plays on similar middle-class fears as 2008's Eden Lake but whereas that film played on the social class theme to a depressing extent, Them simply wants to scare us. Its running time of 75 minutes is perfect too as not a single second is wasted as the tension is cranked up to unbelievable levels.
Give or take a few moments, there's almost no real gore in the film either and it's all the better for it. The twist at the end is also scary as the identities of the killers are revealed as they jump on a bus... Along with Martyrs and Haute Tension, France has really been at the forefront of horror since 2000 and with Them they have perhaps created one of the truly great horrors of recent years.
Its sole aim is to scare you and it does it brilliantly and concisely.
