20 Horror Movies Nobody Expected To Be Good

James Wan and Leigh Whannell's Saw was a box office sensation when it hit screens in 2004. Not only did the gritty, low-budget horror go on to spawn multiple sequels, but it also helped kick-start a trend of what became known as "torture porn" films.

While the subsequent Saw instalments featured a variety of imaginatively gruesome traps, an increasingly convoluted plot and dwindling critical reception saw interest in the franchise gradually die out. Following the underwhelming spin-off Spiral: From the Book of Saw, hope for this series was all but gone.

That was until Saw X arrived in 2023, putting the series firmly back on the horror radar.

Taking place between the events of Saw and Saw II, this instalment sees John Kramer (played again by series veteran Tobin Bell) seek twisted retribution on a group of scammers who claimed to be able to cure his terminal cancer.

Not only does the tenth entry contain some of the series' most squeamishly grotesque traps, but director Kevin Greutert created a gripping, character-driven thriller that successfully added to the franchise's overarching narrative in meaningful ways.

Receiving the highest critical rating of the entire series, Saw X is essential viewing for genre fans.
