7. The World Security Council Orders A Nuclear Strike (The Avengers)

Talk about heavy-handed... During the Chitauri invasion, the World Security Council (Nick Fury's superiors) decided to bring the battle to a halt by launching a nuclear missile towards Manhattan where the bulk of the battle was taking place. Fury was totally against this idea, but the order went through despite his wishes, and the missile was indeed launched. Thankfully, Fury was able to contact Iron Man, who intercepted the missile and guided it in to the portal where it would destroy the Chitauri mothership and (conventiently) all of the Chitauri soldiers. Why didn't they do that in the first place? The missile directed at Manhattan would have destroyed an important area of the world and killed more people than had already been killed, when the obvious opening gambit would have been to direct it at the mothership in the first place - the Avengers could easily have handled the remaining Chitauri forces.
