6. Captain America Wanted To Close The Portal (The Avengers)

After Tony Stark had guided the nuclear missile in to the portal and destroyed the Chitauri mothership, the Avengers stood and watched as all of the existing Chitauri forces on Earth died as a result (obviously being part of some kind of hive mind whose source was on said mothership). Stark's venture in to space in order for this to happen caused him to fall unconscious and he slowly began to fall back towards the portal's entrance. After having not appeared for a few seconds, and with the other Avengers watching the portal to wait for Stark's return, Captain America decided that Stark definitely wasn't coming back and that the portal should be closed. Way to give the guy who just saved the Earth a chance to get back, Cap! No sooner had he said "close it", Stark fell through - still alive, nonetheless. Had Cap's orders been immediately obeyed, or had Stark's descent back to Earth taken just a couple more seconds, the armoured hero would have been lost in space forever.
