sex, lies and videotape is no as salacious as the title would make out. While there are one or two sex scenes, most of the sex stuff is limited to characters talking about their experiences while James Spader films them. Steven Soderbergh's film is an important one in the history of independent film as its success ($25m box-office against a $1.2m budget) shed new light on their potential. Its success was unprecedented and led to Hollywood trying to ape the formula with varying results. Soderbergh instantly became the indie darling of the film world and the James Spader and Andie MacDowell's careers went from strength to strength on the back of it.
