Ridley Scott has been on record in interviews stating that he’s not generally a fan of Polish-British novelist Joseph Conrad’s works though as any self-respecting Scott buff will tell you, it was Conrad’s short story The Duel that would form the basis of his directorial debut The Duellist.

While Scott may not be a diehard Conrad fan, he certainly had some kind of fascination with him back in the day and went on to reference the writer again in Alien. The spacecraft Nostromo taking its name from a 1904 novel of the same name by Conrad and its shuttle Narcissus getting its name from the unfortunately titled Conrad novella The N*gger of the Narcissus.

In a nice bit of continuity on behalf of Aliens director James Cameron the name of the spaceship in the first Alien sequel, Sulaco, references the fictional town that is the setting of Conrad’s Nostromo.
