This year’s James Gunn-helmed Superman may be a bit rubbery and suffer a little from too large a dose of Guardians of the Galaxy humour, and, yes, pretty much every character is either cackling evil or painfully simpleminded. But, you know what? It does the job. It drags Supes and the DC Universe out of that desaturated, moody place Zack Snyder has been holding it hostage, and brings it into the present via the hyper-coloured comic book material of the past.

And the fun doesn’t stop there.

Next year, we’re getting a big screen adaptation of Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s recent comic book miniseries Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, with Milly Alcock in the lead role. We already got a taste of the character in the Superman film, and if that’s anything to go by, this iteration of Kara Zor-El will be far from traditional. The Supergirl movie sends the 21-year-old hero around the galaxy with her dog Krypto, where her free-wheeling, hard-living style is likely to get her into all sorts of bother.

Supergirl fans have waited a long time to see their girl lead a big-screen adaptation again (since 1984, in fact), and now seems very much like the right time.
