The M3GAN franchise tactically changed genres this year, with Gerard Johnstone’s 2.0 easing off the horror and shifting up into action-comedy mode. And Blumhouse is lucky it did, because not only is it a refreshing and rejuvenating watch that manages to avoid just re-treading the previous film’s plot, but M3GAN 2.0 has opened up the franchise in the process, allowing it to be far more multifaceted than other killer doll series.

The proof of this is just about already here, with the next film in the series spinning off into erotic thriller territory. Set in the broader M3GAN world, but following a new cast of characters with their own concerns, SOULM8TE is the story of a man (David Rysdahl) who buys a companion android to cope with his wife’s passing - but all doesn’t go to plan.

We’ve seen shades of this plotline in this year’s Companion - albeit with a twist - but we expect SOULM8TE to have something new to offer, especially as it has fresh talent Kate Dolan behind the camera and Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and James Wan on script duties.

And, yes, SOULM8TE should technically be pronounced “Soulmate-te”, but given Fincher got away with "Se7en", we’ll allow it.
