Ridley Scott has one of the most uneven filmographies of any revered director, and yet it’s his willingness to try everything and not limit himself in genre, approach, or subject matter - no matter the outcome - that has kept his work fresh and intriguing over the years. His next project is no different.

No, unfortunately, it’s not the concluding chapter to his (presumably abandoned) Alien trilogy - after Prometheus and Alien: Covenant - but it is another foray into science fiction.

Scott is adapting Peter Heller’s 2012 post-apocalyptic fiction novel The Dog Stars, which places forlorn survivor Hig in an airplane hangar with his dog and torn-faced ex-marine Bangley for company. They’ll fend off invaders and search for the source of a transmission that might suggest a larger, better life than the one they currently suffer.

Sir Ridley has responded to contemporary events by making the apocalyptic event a flu-like virus, and has signed on boy-wonder Jacob Elordi in the main role, opposite the ever-reliable Josh Brolin. We’re keen to see what Elordi does when he’s the centre of attention and not cloaked in the mystique of Elvis or Guillermo Del Toro’s prosthetics, and hopeful that this is a bullseye for Scott’s reliably hit-or-miss career.
