20 Most Anticipated Sci-Fi Movies Arriving In 2026

5. The Dish

The Mandalorian Season 3
Warner Bros.

UK release date: 16th June

Preliminarily titled “The Dish”, Steven Spielberg’s next movie is looming on the horizon, and it’s bringing him back to sci-fi - the genre that the Jurassic Park, AI, Minority Report, and E.T. director does best.

Nothing is certain about the plot, but we do know it will be a UFO film (calling back, either directly or indirectly, to the director’s breakout 1977 sci-fi flick Close Encounters of the Third Kind), we know it will be scored by John Williams, and we know the names on its sizeable cast list. Being one of the greatest directors in Hollywood has its perks, and one of those is being able to sign on Emily Blunt, Josh O'Connor, Colin Firth, Colman Domingo, and Wyatt Russell all for the same film.

David Koepp - the man behind the first Jurassic Park script - is writing the thing with Spielberg, and while even Koepp has been tight-lipped on what to expect, he has promised a combination of “vast spectacle with really honest human emotion”. So, just another day at the office, then?

In any case, after Spielberg’s most recent movie, the maudlin and mawkish (although well-earned) The Fabelmans, it is about time we once again saw him doing what he does best.
