It was clear long before the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi that Lucasfilm was incredibly happy with Rian Johnson's work as writer-director, something further confirmed by the recent announcement that Johnson has been given his own trilogy of new Star Wars spin-off movies.

The films will tell a three-act arc and be completely removed from the Skywalker Saga, which given the series' sometimes harmful reliance on nostalgia, is certainly encouraging.

If Johnson can come up with a compelling new story filled with enticing new heroes and villains, then the expansion of the Star Wars franchise should avoid feeling like too much of an excessive cash grab moving forward. With Johnson's superb work on The Last Jedi, it's easy to be optimistic.
