11. Ballerina - The Flamethrower

Ballerina
Lionsgate

This here is, without question, the best use of a flamethrower since Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Ballerina, the John Wick spin-off, doesn't feature a huge amount of Keanu Reeves' titular assassin but it still delivered on the full-throttle action that fans of the series have come to expect. Like many good action films, it builds up and saves the hardest punches for last.

During protagonist Eve Maccaro's (Ana De Armas) battle in a town occupied by members of the cult that killed her father, Eve gets her hands on a freaking flamethrower and proceeds to torch her way through scores of enemy goons. A particular henchman gets a hold of a flamethrower himself towards the end, so the pair end up having a fiery duel.

Alongside the typically sharp choreography and cinematography, what makes this so effective is that it's all real, with actual fire being used throughout the sequence. It was a hard thing to film and De Armas herself is said to have found setting stunt-performers on fire quite traumatic at first, but it all paid off to give this spin-off a truly Wick-worthy set-piece it could be proud of.
