British costume designer John Mollo is best known as the man who brought to life the iconic wardrobes of characters like Princess Leia, Han Solo and Darth Vader in George Lucas’s Star Wars, which won him his first Academy Award for Costume Design in 1978.

Five years later, Mollo would repeat his Oscar success after designing the historical costumes for Richard Attenborough’s epic drama Gandhi alongside Indian costume designer Bhanu Athaiya, while in between he worked on classics like The Empire Strikes Back and Ridley Scott’s Alien.

His later costume designs featured in films like the 1992 biopic Chaplin and cult sci-fi horror Event Horizon, while he also served as a military advisor on movies including Franklin J. Schaffner’s Nicholas and Alexandra and Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon.
