2. The Avengers
I could practically leave this page blank, and the title itself would pretty much say it better than I can. The Avengers: the single greatest comic book movie ever made, bar none; and thats coming from a DC fan. While it of course has its critics, the numbers really do speak for themselves. Its total lifetime gross: over $1.4 billion dollars. Its a number I can scarcely even begin to comprehend, and sees it sitting in the #3 spot for highest earning movies of all time; and thats even before the home video release. With The Avengers, Whedon made a pure comic book adaptation, without fear of making it acceptable for a movie going audience, but instead aiming it solely at the fans of the source. And thats undoubtedly why it worked so well. For once, the comic book fans in the audience didnt leave the theatre feeling jaded and disenfranchised; for once someone gave us exactly what we wanted. Of course it didnt please everyone. It was no Apocalypse Now, or Taxi Driver sure but that wasnt its purpose. As an adaptation of a comic book, The Avengers was almost flawless, and for what that means to a comic book fan, I thank Joss Whedon every day.
