20 Recent Movies That Deserve A Sequel
5. Avatar: Fire & Ash
Stretching way back to when the first film was released in 2009, it has been no secret that James Cameron planned multiple Avatar sequels. The timeline may have drastically changed with the scope of the projects, but a five movie story was always the plan.
When The Way of Water finally released in 2022, it wasn't quite the same as when the original came out, and for Fire and Ash in 2025, the novelty has worn considerably. Avatar was a can't miss event in 2009, however neither sequel has felt as special or as unique.
The box office gross has fallen with each entry in the series as well, though Fire and Ash still comfortably passed one billion dollars. The biggest issue is that the sequels have largely covered the same ground as those that came before it, even while introducing new aspects of Pandora, but that doesn't mean the films need to stop.
James Cameron has suggested in the past that the fourth installment is by no means guaranteed, but even in spite of the sequels' struggles, that shouldn't condemn the series to go unfinished. This much has been earned, and with the outings still making money, there is no reason not to allow Cameron to finish his vision, even if it eventually takes another decade.
