7. In the Blink of an Eye
Andrew Stanton's In the Blink of an Eye was nothing if not ambitious - a sci-fi drama set across three disparate time periods, following a family in prehistory, a romance in the present, and an astronaut journeying through space in the far-flung future.
Structurally and thematically, Stanton's film feels reminiscent of Darren Aronofsky's criminally underappreciated The Fountain, which similarly examined the human experience across large chasms of time, yet In the Blink of an Eye conversely fails to tie its disparate threads into a meaningful whole.
Despite solid performances from Kate McKinnon, Rashida Jones, and Daveed Diggs, this feels like a slog at even just 94 minutes - an airy, meditative drama that doesn't really have anything illuminating to say about humanity, nor does it succeed as a basic, emotional character drama.
Considering the film spent two and a half years in post-production limbo before being dumped on streaming, though, this outcome probably shouldn't be that surprising.
