6. Him
The marketing for the Jordan Peele-produced Him did a stellar job of selling it as "Get Out for American football," as an up-and-coming player (Tyriq Withers) learns the true price of fame while training at the remote compound of a soon-to-retire quarterback (Marlon Wayans).
With the marketing training an explicit focus on the sport's physicality, it sure seemed like Him was primed to be a savage - if unsubtle - takedown of head injuries and CTE in contact sports.
That's certainly ripe, timely subject matter for a horror film.
But Him is really far more of a generic "we have Jordan Peele at home" horror riff that, for all of its visual splendour and solid performances, has desperately little interesting going on under the hood.
By the time it arrives at its third act, Him descends into a death spiral of abject silliness, centered around supernatural blood rituals, from which it's unable to recover, squandering a terrific setup in the process.
